Phonics and Reading
At Hackforth and Hornby CE Primary School, we use the Department of Education’s Letters and Sounds programme to support our phonics teaching. Staff work with the Burley Woodhead Literacy Hub to teach phonics and reading, using phonically decodable books. These books promote automatic decoding to secure fluency, building confidence during KS1. Across the school, pupils are encouraged to choose fiction and nonfiction books from our extensive classroom libraries.
Handwriting
Pupils practise an effective, simply joined, legible style, which meets National Curriculum requirements.
Spelling
Homework encourages pupils to practise spelling patterns. Regular assessments inform our teaching.
